I give it a 3.5 stars. This book is not for everyone. As someone else stated Dare is not someone you will love. He is a real jerk and too much of a pompous lord. He is really, really unlikeable until at least halfway thru the book. Maybe a like longer. He has a good reason to be like he is. However if you like a book where someone starts off bad and then changes for the better you may like this. Nivea is a kind sweet person, almost one of those people who is too cheerful, however sometimes she comes off kind of like a ninny. She is an over weight on the shelf heroine. Even though she does lose some weight during the book her weight is a constant source of comments. Other than the fact that she fell in love with Dare when he was younger and nicer and he saved her brother, you have no idea why she would even like him. There is nothing too exciting in the book. It is basically her being infatuated with him and her slowly bringing him around to be a better people. Also him finally being able not to care what anyone else thinks of her weight since he loves her. Everyone expects him to marry someone beautiful whether or not he likes the person. You will have to decide if you want to take a chance or not.

most of the hero in HR/medieval/victorian romance are always brooding and mean.. so no surprise here that our hero was also the typical type.. no problem! my problem is the lack of pride n our heroine here.. if you've been insulted several times plus your self esteem s really low.. you can at least redeem your self-worth by having a little pride. Not just fall right to the same arms that insulted you! the lack of groveling is what missing here.. but I do like the flow and sexiness of the story
I found this book to be absolutely charming! Descriptive writing, sexy scenes, and all the other components I expect in a good historical romance read. For me, Ms. Burrows lands herself next to names like Hannah Howell, Eliza Knight, and Paula Quinn. Congrats on a wonderfully engaging story that once started, I was unable to put down. Now its three in the morning, and I'm still smiling!
Alleigh Burrows debut novel had me hooked from the beginning…I had to keep turning the pages to see if Nivea would end up with Dare, of if his psychological wounds would chase her away. The story was everything a romance should be sexy love scenes twined around a compelling tale of what happens to a man who has grown up without love. To everyone who loves historical romances, try Ms. Burrows. You'll be thoroughly entertained!
This was a great book. The first I've read from Alleigh. My only gripe with the book is I really don't like it when they go back and forth with believing someone, then not believing them, and so on. For me, it's the only part of the story that I didn't like, but otherwise, it was a great story and you really honestly want to slap him throughout most of the book. She does a really good job with his character. I would recommend it.
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!! If this was her first book, she did a GREAT job. I have not been able to locate any other works by her. I would have bought it for the cover alone. What a handsome, sexy guy! I almost felt like I was there. I hated to see it end. Come on, Alleigh, we need another one!
I generally don't write reviews but I had to for this novel as I loved it so much. It was beautifully written and had a wonderful ebb and flow to the story. Our H does indeed act like a jackass most of the time but it is quite wonderful to watch him grow, mature, change and admit fault, something he would never had done at the start of the novel. It was quite a joy to watch him grow...I think it is one of the best stories out there where there is actual growth and change. Our h needs to stand up for herself a tad bit more. Yes, she has been in love with him forever and yes, it was in her nature to be forgiving...I just wish that after he treated her so cruelly, she would have made him grovel a little bit. Wonderful novel. I am sure everyone will enjoy it. The love scenes were good but not scorching like Heath would write but good none the less...it showed a true connection between the characters which I feel is important (I don't like gratuitous sex). Overall, great book, couldn't put it down. Well done for a first book....well done indeed!
I thought this was the best book I had read for awhile. I had to keep reading to see if Dare Landis Marquis of Raynaforth would stop his rake life style. Nivea Horsham had been in love with him since her brother had bought him home for a visit.they were at school together and still friends at the present time years later. Her younger sister is getting married and stepmother is trying to get Nivea and Dane together. She arranged them to ride in a coach together to the wedding. He barely speaks to she is plump and plain not what interests him. They have a mishap on the way which will actually help Nivea . I kept reading as I was not sure at times if dare and Nivea could ever have a future together. He was a womanizer usually for one night only. He did begin to see Nivea in a new light how kind and good she was. He then would turn around and holler at her and make her feel like nothing. He had made her feel before he was at least her friend. I won't reveal anymore their relationship has so many up and down. I will let you enjoy the suspense will it end up with a HEA
