This is the first book in an utterly fantastic series.
Kaylin is absolutely amazing. I almost immediately can relate to her and the way she thinks and behaves and believes.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching Kaylin grow just in this first book. I love her friends and "enemies". Everyone is so multi-dimensional and deep.

I am a VERY picky reader.. and this is the first series in nearly a year that I have thoroughly enjoyed.
How in the WORLD did I miss it for over 10 years?
Although, I am glad.. because that means I didn't have to wait a full year for each new book.. LOL
I see a lot of complaints and I honestly don't understand them.
Maybe some people just want light entertainment. Maybe they don't want to have to think and consider.
This is a series for highly imaginative people - who can comprehend complex ideas. It is not something you can read just once.
This is the BEST kind of books and BEST kind of series.

The first time I read this, it was a library book. Soon.. very soon.. this coming week, the one's I ordered will arrive and I will be able to read them again the old fashioned way.. with pages and held in my hand, properly.
I already know that I will be reading these books over and over for years.. I hope the series goes on for a long long time because there is so much story to tell.

Today, right now, the world is a dark place. There is hatred between races and people. This book speaks to that.. it shows that there is hope.. that people can get along, but it doesn't do it in a way that is noticeable. If today's youth read this series.. they will open doors to original thought, to the knowledge that making a difference doesn't have to be rewarded in public, that being ourselves and being true to ourselves opens so many doors.

Maybe the people who tried reading this and couldn't reach that level of understand are just too old and set in their ways to see that there is more to our world than black and white.
I pity them.

READ THIS BOOK! READ THIS SERIES!
If you've read this much of my review, I KNOW this book is right for you.

Don't listen to the nay sayers, that's not who you are, is it..... You are more than that. You are more than they can ever be. More than they can dream.

Cast in Shadow Chronicles of Elantra Book 1 Michelle Sagara 9780373802364 Books Reviews

There are things I really loved about this book. The setting was well-developed, and much of the story was compelling. However, certain phrases and ideas were repeated to the point I became frustrated. Also, some scenes (particularly ones involving critical action or magic) were written in a confusing vague way, so that I had trouble understanding what was happening. I never normally have that problem with books, so it impacted my enjoyment.

Without those issues, it could have been a four or even five star book. I certainly kept turning pages, wanting to know what was going to happen. The unique concept and gripping plot pulled me right in. I just wish it could be cleaned up a bit more.
I love the characters in Cast in Shadow. They have depth, and flaws, and secrets. People have been hiding information about Kaylin from herself, but for once I understood why and didn’t find myself frustrated with this as a reader. Kaylin is impetuous and undisciplined, but I understood why the people around her tended to cut her some slack.

The worldbuilding is fantastic. The setting feels unique and fascinating. It’s detailed just enough to feel complete, without any ungainly infodumps to slow things down. The ecosystem of races and levels of society sucked me in and left me wanting more. There are plenty of mysteries to the world, such that I can easily imagine not growing tired of things through the rest of the series–I can’t wait to read the other books and find out if that holds true. On the one hand I wish I’d discovered this series before now, but at least this way I don’t have to wait before reading more installments in the series! I did occasionally find the descriptions of magic’s use slightly confusing, but this didn’t significantly detract from my enjoyment.

The plot dragged me in thoroughly. I had trouble tearing myself away from the pages even though I’ve been really restless lately, which I wholly appreciate. There are some serious moral dilemmas in here rather than easy black-and-white answers. I shed tears more than once, which always says great things about how emotionally engaging a book is.
I'm struggling through this book. I'm on chapter 3 and I still don't have a clue what's going on, or how the main characters are fitting into the story. I think this book would have benefited from a good prologue, something to explain how this world is laid out, who the major players are, etc. If you're three chapters into a book and you still don't have a good idea of what's going on, then I blame that on bad writing. The whole key to writing a fantasy novel is world-building - you've got to describe the world to us, give us clues of what the "rules" are, who the characters are. I am not getting a cohesive picture of the world Sagara is trying to write about, at all. I'm going to stick it out for a few more chapters and see if it gets any better, but so far, I can't say I'm impressed with Sagara's writing.
Fell in love with Kaylin from the start. She is naive and street smart, down to earth and very human. She is messy, and lacks punctuality as well as diplomacy, but refuses to let a little something like fear stand in the way when she is the only one with the power to save the world. A power she herself and those around her little understand. And despite her little understood power she remains humble, even after saving the world, insisting on keeping her low paying, thankless job as a Hawk, and those around her continue to see the 13 year old she was rather than the adult she wants to be. Unlike many fantasy world's, where the young hero develops both control and maturity Kaylin remains herself, messy and irreverent. The author blends in a host of characters from various races, many with their own agendas, and a dark evil that has many forms. The story is lightened with humor and driven by action. It was exciting to find a whole new fantasy world to delve onto.
