I can only give it 4 stars because I found the writing style difficult to follow at times. The story is very good, but I found myself having to reread pages to figure out who was talking. The story was worth the effort to read it, despite the trouble I had at times, and I would recommend the book.Sometimes the nicknames of characters were used and it was confusing, especially since there were several chapters between the appearance of the character, and sometimes, the nickname was used, and sometimes their formal name was used. I found myself continuing to read, despite the question of who this was, and I would eventually find a tidbit clarifying the character. This caused some backtracking to make sure I kept abreast of the story.
At times, the story jumped around too much, and I found myself disappointed when the story stopped, picked up at a previous spot, and then returned chapters later. I had to stop and refer to the character listing in the beginning of the book several times, because, I was too confused to continue.
The character of Hyacinth was developed as a fairly main character and then just disappeared. In the second half, there were a few tidbits about him, that felt disjointed from the rest of the story. The resolution at the end of the book felt more like a footnote, than his story.
I had to read the last 2 chapters three times to figure out who was alive, who was dreaming, and who was dead. I was still left with some questions at the end, but I think I figured it out. Then there was what seemed like an alternate ending, but in really was a piece out of the ending, explained by the author as left out, due to her sister reading it while very ill. I understand that, at the time, but 15 years later, It makes for even more confusion at the end.
The big question unresolved, so where was Hyacinth, how did he get there, and what were the circumstances? He was too important in the previous books, and the first half to appear at the book end without much explanation. There was so much detail in the chapters leading up to the ending, and so little detail in the ending. The ending feels rushed.
Since writing style is subjective, the story itself is worth reading. I just had trouble with the layout, story lines that were too detailed, and then other story lines which needed more details. Multiple characters with nicknames was also a bit confusing.

Now Face To Face Karleen Koen 9781575661773 Books Reviews
After reading the author's book, Through A Glass Darkly, for years I yearned for a sequel; finally, I discovered that the author had, not only a sequel but also a prequel; I ordered both the prequel and sequel and began my reading experience anew with all three of the books, starting with the prequel, Dark Angels, re-reading the original, Through A Glass Darkly, and finishing with this book, Now Face to Face. Although Through A Glass Darkly was one of my very most favorite books of all time, I did not find the prequel, Dark Angels, nor this one, the sequel, Now Face to Face, as good as the original, Through A Glass Darkly. I enjoyed reading the two new ones, the prequel and this one, the sequel, as it filled in the main character's life before and after the original. It has been awhile since reading these books, therefore, I could not give this particular book a review that I would consider justifiably adequate. I know that I did like all three of them and all three of them still sit on my shelf in anticipation of a re-read of all of them someday. I gave this one a four star rating only because I had read the original, Through A Glass Darkly, before she wrote either the sequel or the prequel (the author says the prequel started out to be a different book, but the main character kept ending up in the story line and finally she decided it would be a prequel to Through A Glass Darkly) and I considered the original book the best; this one and the prequel are both very good books though . If you decide to read any of these books, I advise starting at the prequel and read all three in the order the author intended, prequel, Dark Angels, original, Through A Glass Darkly, and then the sequel, Now Face to Face.
I would have rated this 5 stars, but when I came to the end there was little resolution for many of the characters I had invested so much time in. One of them being the main character. Is this because the next chapters of their lives will be revealed in a sequel? If that's the case I will change my rating, but as the author chose to write a prequel to the series instead of completing the story, I am not sure what she intends. I have read other well written books, with beautiful prose and a story that keeps me up all night and then the ending is summed up in a couple of pages. An ending that doesn't do the story justice, an ending that is not representative of the hundreds of pages I have willingly invested my time in reading. These endings leaves one wondering, is the author trying to meet a deadline? Is Now Face to Face another one of those books? I certainly hope not.
I bought this book because I really enjoyed "Through a Glass Darkly" but this book is so poorly written it's hard to believe it was the same author. There are huge plot gaps, and the entire book seems to be a series of paragraphs written at different times and then badly stitched together. It's as if the author would jot down a page or two as they occurred to her, with no effort to connect them coherently. Stories lines are just left hanging, resolutions appear out of nowhere with no explanation, the story repeats itself in strange places, and every other page consists of a [sometimes lengthy] quotation from other authors. Even more bizarre is a section at the end of the book the author "really liked" but didn't include for personal reasons that she outlined. However, she included it at the end?? How does that make sense?? A HUGE disappointment.
I can only give it 4 stars because I found the writing style difficult to follow at times. The story is very good, but I found myself having to reread pages to figure out who was talking. The story was worth the effort to read it, despite the trouble I had at times, and I would recommend the book.
