To my knowledge, I've read all of Ms. Robards books. This is the first one that I can remember that wasn't a "can't wait until the next page". Reed Ware, hero, is a New Orleans Police detective. He gets attached to 2 homeless borderline criminal brothers, Holly and Ant. The brothers have evidence of execution type murders committed by NOPD. Reed goes to the Superintendent of Police with the info and he is immediately fired and then accused of taking bribes. Holly is arrested for drugs and thrown in jail. Reed knows Holly will not live through the night unless he does something, so he decides to go to a Christmas Eve party held by the Police Superintendent and take everyone hostage. The police call in a hostage negotiator, Caroline.

Caroline is the daughter of the police superintendent. Reed negotiates the release of Holly. He kidnaps Caroline and runs with her and Holly. Holly tells him that the NOPD has Ant so he also has to get Ant because he knows the dirty cops will kill him. I'll not go into any more details of the story. I wouldn't want to spoil it for other readers.

I really liked Reed's character, not so much Caroline. I thought Reed was a honest hardworking police officer who did what he could to protect everyone. Ms. Robards lets us know Reed's POV and his thinking process to resolve the BIG problems, especially getting everyone out alive. I really enjoyed his reasoning. Holly was a smart behind who wouldn't listen to Reed. I thought Ms. Robards dwelled too much on Caroline's thoughts; "daddy" issues and her former crush on Reed. Caroline just bored me. This could have been a really good mystery/thriller with a little romance but is not. I think, for me, it was Caroline's character. I just didn't like her. She was a cross between a hard headed "little" girl and a want to be sex kitten. I think she is suppose to be considered a strong woman, but I didn't think so. The ending is very good. It's the best part of the book.

I will always consider Ms. Robards as one of my "favorites". But this book was not. Hunted definitely did not reach the outstanding mystery/thriller status as in her Dr. Charlotte Stone books, The Last Victim and The Last Kiss Goodbye. Now those books are the definition of page turners!

Good reading all.

Hunted Karen Robards 9781451678710 Books Reviews

I'm a big fan of Karen Robards. Every other book I've read has been good, great, or at least a decent way to pass the time. This was awful. I didn't manage to finish it. It has every error of an amateur author

Implausible character actions? Check. Caroline, an adult and career policewoman aligns herself with her kidnapper because she had a crush on him when she was a teen, despite the fact that there are some reasons to believe he went off the deep end. She joins his side in about ten seconds flat, after not having seen him in 10 years and having no clue what the issue is.

Repeating scenes in the other POV? Check. Every time something happens in one char's POV, we will get a reprise in the other's. When you add pages of not much happening other than lusting for each other, this gets tedious fast.

Orphans designed to show that the hero is really a hero, not a kidnapper? Check. The kids conveniently disappear for half of the book,
so that they don't interfere with the heavy lusting between the two MCs.

I could go on. I will note that books written before and after this one are up to Robard's usual standards. I just don't know what happened here.
I stopped reading this very early because I could not read about a good cop breaking the law to solve a crime. I assume there is a completely implausible happy ending where good triumphs and the H/h fall in love. Sorry, don't want to read this in spite of this having been written by one of my favorite authors. I should have read the intro. Next time I'll be more careful. I will delete this from my .
I always look forward to new releases from Karen Robards. This story was entertaining, but lately this author's books seem to have very similar plots. Don't get me wrong, it was a very good read. Very action packed. There were parts of the book where it seemed as if it would be nearly impossible for Reed and Caroline to get out of some intense life endangering situations. However, the author was very clever and found ways for the characters to narrowly escape. Are you kidding me!!!?? Sure did not see that coming!!! Brilliant!! There was funny dialog portrayed by young street thug "Holly" and it would have been nice to have more of his humor in the book. I rate this book 4 stars and recommend it especially if you enjoy mystery/romance reads with good cop/bad cop situations.
I've read all of Karen Robards books and though she is a good writer, I considered her latest novel, Hunted, nothing to get excited about. This is one of Karen Robards books that I almost didn't finish because it didn't hold my interest. This is not to say others won't like it but, as for me, I was disappointed in it.
A 3 star rating is mediocre in my book. I’m on the fence about this author, having now read three of Karen Robards' books. The first one was “Shattered,” which apparently I thought was good enough to entice me to buy “Hunted,” which was “OK enough” that I read a third book, “Guilty” (and I thought “Guilty” rated 4 1/2 stars). Since then, I’ve read a number of Robards reviews where I discovered both consistent praise related to her books' page turner qualities, and consistent criticism regarding her penchant for rambling. The criticism, which exactly reflects my opinion of “Hunted,” stems from plot-less chapters that go on and on ad nauseam about the “should we or shouldn’t we” attraction between the two main characters. After a while, I could not have cared less whether these 2 idiots kissed, made love, or danced an Irish jig. The author’s feeble attempt at writing something steamy became a superfluous detail that was both annoying and distracting to the plot, if there even was a plot at that point. Perhaps Ms. Robards was stalling until some semblance of story-line took hold again. That said, the parts that were suspenseful were quite good, the character development was much more than decent, eventually the plot took hold again, and the ending was satisfying.
